Know The Industry: Making The Most Of Every Haircut

Until then, we won’t be educating you (or quizzing you on taper vs. fade or clipper lengths today) but instead, we will discuss things you should say and do while in the chair that will help make your next haircut an extraordinary experience:

Know What General Style You Want

You should try to give a general description of what you are looking for. Perhaps you want a modern style, or perhaps there’s a style icon you want to imitate. You can bring in a photo or two to assist you.

Share How Much You Want Cut and Where

Let your stylist or barber know how long it has been since your last haircut – this helps him/her visualize what it looked like previously. The last thing you want to say is, “Just a little off the top.” Say something more along the lines of “half an inch off the top” or “a quarter inch on the sides.”

If you want, this is also a good time to share if you want some texture in your hair. A lot of modern men’s hairstyles use layers, point cutting, or razoring. If you don’t know what makes sense for you, just ask! Your stylist is a professional – defer to them for specific details that you are unsure of.

Finally, share your preferences for your arches (the area around your ear) and your sideburns. These are the finishing touches to a great haircut and your stylist will ensure that it is executed flawlessly.

Talk About Your Lifestyle

Do you have an outdoor or indoor job? What do you like to do for fun? Where do you go on the weekends? How do you tend to wear your hair on a daily basis and how do you wear it on a day off? You want to make sure that your haircut fits your lifestyle and reflects your personality; by sharing these details with your stylist, they will understand your requests and needs in another dimension.

The Secret Weapon: Listen

So that’s a lot of talking! You’ve shared when your last haircut was and all your preferences and desires. Now it’s time to take advantage of the fact that your barber or stylist cuts hair “all day every day” and has a vested interest in making you look great. Listen to their opinions and perspectives, and be willing to bend to their wisdom. Come in with an open mind and be willing to listen to the expert in their field.

Like any good relationship, there’s going to be some give-and-take. Your stylist will welcome your feedback and it will help your relationship develop so that each haircut can continuously improve.
